Joumana Kayrouz, the prominent Michigan Accident Attorney recently named one of the state’s Top Lawyers for 2012, received an exclusive invitation to attend the inauguration of President Barack Obama and the President’s Inauguration Ball that took place in Washington D.C. on Monday Jan. 21.

announce plans to build Eye Center

Detroit – Prominent Michigan Accident attorney Joumana Kayrouz and leaders of the Government of Lebanon agreed to build an eye center in Southern Lebanon that will provide health care services to disabled individuals facing eye loss and sight issues.

Kayrouz also announced that as a way to give back to her country she will open a charitable donor’s fund in Lebanon called The Joumana Kayrouz and Daughters Foundation, to also honor her daughters Stephanie and Nathalie Shamma.

The announcements came during an 6-day tour of Lebanon where Kayrouz was invited to lecture to over 400 students, professors and politicians at Beirut Arab University (BAU) about her personal success and achievements in the United States, and on the role women in Lebanon can play in strengthening society.

During the tour, Kayrouz met with Randa Berri, the Second Lady of Lebanon and the wife of the Speaker of the House Nabih Berri. Also the head of the Lebanese Welfare Association for the Handicapped, Randa Berri and Joumana Kayrouz discussed their mutual concern for the plight of disabled victims, especially children.

“Randa Berri and I spent about 8 hours discussing the concerns we share to help people in Lebanon, especially those marginalized by Lebanese society and the Lebanese government. I was beyond being moved by her commitment, activism, and her ability to overcome challenges over the years to bring support to people in need,” said Kayrouz.

“We seemed to share so much and I immediately identified with her commitment to those who need help.”

Kayrouz was led on a tour of the disability center by Berri and saw firsthand the ongoing needs, including helping people to walk and also speak for the first time in their lives among many other circumstances. So moved by what she saw, Kayrouz immediately donated $50,000 to Berri’s center.

The visit concluded with an intimate, private dinner with Berri at her and Speaker Nabih Berri’s home, where they discussed the need for the eye center. Berri immediately announced the eye center would be inaugurated in the name of Joumana Kayrouz. Berri asked Kayrouz to accept an invitation to travel to Southern Lebanon to officially open its doors when completed.

Kayrouz said the Second lady of Lebanon reminisced that while she was pregnant she would deliver food and much needed supplies to people in need in Southern Lebanon during the dangerous times.

“She shared with me how bombs were exploding behind her as she was driving but she believed that God would get her through it safely because she was doing His work,” said Kayrouz, who stressed that Berri was an activist long before she became the wife of a Lebanese politician.

During the trip, Kayrouz met with several high government and political leaders and gave multiple TV interviews. She also attended the inauguration of a lecture hall at BAU and was honored to offer the first lecture.

Kayrouz said she spoke with many students at the BAU about the challenges they face and one that really impressed her was the concern many of the young women had about overcoming societal limits on the role of women.

“I told them about my story overcoming the obstacles that many women face in struggling to be successful in a still male-dominated society in America and they connected immediately,” Kayrouz said.

“Afterwards, the students spoke about the lack of scholarships for their education and how difficult it is for women to find jobs and break through the glass ceiling that holds women down in Arab society. They said Arab women often only rise to power when they are in partnership with prominent male figures in their lives, like a father, husband, or brother but that rising independently on their own merits is difficult.”

Kayrouz said a part-time security guard at the University explained how she was holding down two other jobs just trying to survive, but wanted desperately to get a college education to advance her career.

After speaking with the woman, Kayrouz said she decided to fund her entire education for four years at the BAU.

“I told the students when I spoke that sometimes, you can’t take on everything but that you could make a difference in the world by helping someone,” Kayrouz said.

“Mother Theresa once said ‘Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.’ I believe that instead of being discouraged by the challenges, that we begin by helping someone. I told them I was Grateful to God that He has so blessed me that I am able to help some others like this student.”

Washington, DC - Consistent with APN’s longstanding support for peace and a negotiated two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Americans for Peace Now today called on the Obama Administration and the international community to support the Palestinians’ bid to upgrade their status at the UN to that of non-member observer state. APN called on the Obama Administration, Israel, and the international community to use this development as a springboard to launch a political process that can yield tangible and constructive results immediately. APN President and CEO Debra DeLee stated:

“In the wake of the latest Gaza War, we believe the international community, led by the Obama Administration, must take urgent action to restore faith in a negotiated two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to strengthen those Israelis and Palestinians, like Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who are standing firmly with such a solution. Supporting Abbas’ UN effort is a first step to doing just that. This effort is explicitly predicated on support for Israeli-Palestinian peace based on parameters long-endorsed by the U.S. and governments around the world, and once again demonstrates Abbas’ laudable determination to achieve progress through non-violent means.

However, developments on the ground are every day eroding the very possibility of achieving the two-state solution and emboldening extremists on both sides. The world's passivity in the face of these developments, and its tacit acquiescence to continued hostilities between and among the parties, has only bolstered those who are eager to close the door, once-and-for-all, on any possibility of coexistence in the region with two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and with security.

“The decision of the Palestinians to once again take their case to the UN does not signal that they are ‘going unilateral’ or rejecting peace. Rather, it reflects the Palestinians’ understandable conviction that, under present circumstances, negotiations will never end the occupation or deliver statehood.   It also reflects their recognition that the situation is nearing a tipping point – the point at which developments on the ground in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, in particular expansion of settlements and settlement-related infrastructure, will make the two-state solution unworkable.

“This initiative is thus a wholly legitimate, if desperate and risky, effort to re-build a modicum of faith in the prospect that negotiations will achieve their ostensible goal – a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – before unilateral actions on the ground make such a solution impossible.”

Fr. Mc Manus Back from West Bank Sickness Stopped Gaza Visit

CAPITOL HILL. Tuesday, November 7, 2012 --- The President of the Capitol Hill-based Irish National Caucus, Fr. Sean Mc Manus, has  returned from his previously  unannounced  two-week visit to the West Bank. Illness forced him to cancel a further week visit to the Gaza Strip.

He had been invited to join the INTERFAITH PEACE-BUILDERS (IFPB) Delegation (Olive Harvest) to Israel-Palestine, Oct. 21 - Nov. 12, 2012.

The Washington INTERFAITH PEACE-BUILDERS describes the purpose of their delegations in this way: “Delegations to Israel/Palestine are designed to begin a process of experiential learning and personal transformation. Our delegations expose participants to perspectives that are not readily available in North America. Meetings are held with diverse representatives of Palestinian and Israeli society, focusing particularly on the voices of those working nonviolently for a resolution to the conflict…”

This was my first visit to The Holy Land, and it was a listening–learning visit for me. Although I knew the basics of the problem, I did not have the hands-on-knowledge like I have of the Northern Ireland problem. I was particularly interested to see, among other things, if any of my own work, like the Mac Bride Principles, could apply to the situation there. It should be noted here that none were more supportive of the Mac Bride Principles than Jewish-American Members of Congress. (I fully document this in my Memoirs, My American Struggle for Justice in Northern Ireland. Washington. 2012.)”

Fr. Mc Manus explained: “ I went with an open, objective mind – though somewhat conflicted. On the one hand, I have a deep reverence for the Jewish people, worldwide. I have also become, through my study, very conscious and ashamed of the past history of Catholic anti-Semitism: how the Catholic Church, even some of its famous Saints and preachers, spread ant-Semitism across the globe. After The Reformation, the Protestant Churches were equally anti-Semitic. Inevitably, such racist and religious demonization helped to pave the way to The Holocaust.

While we must repent for that past Christian anti-Semitism, it must not close our eyes or hardened our hearts to the rights and plights of the Palestinians. I was profoundly shocked by what I saw: systematic, relentless and shameless injustice. Of course, some of it was familiar. After all, the British partitioned both Palestine and Ireland. For the first few days, I kept thinking: “Just like what the Brits did in The North.” But increasingly, I would add, “but a million times worse.”

Fr. Mc Manus (now recovering from his debilitating, but non-serious travel-sickness) explained: “On my trip – my pilgrimage, if you will, -- to the Holy Land, I had been reflecting a lot on what the Hebrew Prophets teach us about justice. For them, religion is rooted in justice that flows from the heart of God. And it is that justice that must bind and bond Jews, Muslims, Protestants and Catholics, and all God’s children. As I return from the Holy Land, I echo one of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s favorite quotes from the Prophet Amos: ‘Let justice roll down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream.’” (New Jerusalem Bible, 5:24).

Declaring women must continue to fight for equality in today’s society, attorney Joumana Kayrouz endorsed three women for the Michigan Supreme Court in the Nov. 6 election.

Kayrouz donated 30 billboards from her vast array of marketing billboards endorsing University of Michigan Law Professor Bridget Mary McCormack, 3^rd Circuit Judge Connie Kelley and 46^th District Chief Judge Pro Tem Shelia Johnson.

Joumana Kayrouz honored for support of St Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Prominent attorney Joumana Kayrouz was honored Thursday at the 50^th Annual Gala Banquet hosted by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for her support of the organization’s mission.

Kayrouz, who is of Lebanese American heritage, was recognized as a “Presenting Sponsor” for her generous donation of $50,000 to the organization which was founded in 1962 by the late Hollywood actor Danny Thomas.

Thomas was born in 1912 in Deerfield, Michigan, to Maronite Catholic immigrants from Lebanon, Charles Yakhoob Kairouz and his wife Margaret Taouk. When he first entered acting, Thomas vowed that if he succeeded in Hollywood, he would open a shrine dedicated to St. Jude, which he did in 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee.

“Danny Thomas is a role model for every American, whether they are immigrants or whether they are born in this country of immigrant parents or grandparents, who came here to embrace opportunity,” Ms. Kayrouz said.

“Not only did he succeed in this country reaching great heights as an iconic American actor in Hollywood and on television with the popular Make Room for Daddy TV series, but he also took it one step further by taking his success and using it to help others.”

The Arab American Festival is an exposure of the Arab countries, culture and the history of the world’s oldest civilization. Joumana Kayrouz to receive Economic Bridge Builder of the Year Award

from American Arab Chamber of Commerce at 20th Anniversary Gala

Prominent attorney Joumana Kayrouz Wednesday said she is thrilled to be one of the recipients of this year’s prestigious American Arab Chamber of Commerce (AACC) “Economic Bridge Builder of the Year Award.”

The award will be presented to Ms. Kayrouz at the AACC 20th anniversary Building Economic Bridges Gala at the Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center on Friday Oct. 26.

Ms. Kayrouz is the owner of the Michigan Center for Personal Injury and the Law Offices of Joumana Kayrouz. In addition, John Antakli, President of INTRACO, will also receive an award.
