64th Anniversary of  Deir Yassin Massacre

Geneva, NY - April 9th at 10:00 a.m. a memorial service will be held at 9 One Mile Point, Geneva, NY to commemorate the attack on the village of Deir Yassin on April 9, 1948. Additional services will take place in Great Britain and Israel.

9 One Mile Point is the site of the only monument in the United States dedicated to the Deir Yassin massacre.  In 2003  a bronze sculpture by internationally renowned Arab-American artist Khalil Bendib depicting an uprooted olive tree, was dedicated in remembrance of the victims of the massacre.

Khalil's sculptures and  ceramics  have been exhibited on three continents - in the United States, Europe, as well as in his native North Africa.

Deir Yassin was a Palestinian village of approximately 600 people. The attacks by Irgun  and the Stern Gang, Zionist paramilitary forces resulted in the killing of over 200  Palestinians men,  women and children according to the head of the International Red Cross Delegation.

This attack is cited as the reason  thousands of Palestinian villagers fled the advancing Jewish irregular forces.

Albert Einstein along with 27 other Jewish intellectuals signed a letter sent to the NY Times Dec. 4, 1948 condemning the massacre.

The original  copy (see below) of a private letter dated one day after the Deir Yassin massacre signed by Albert Einstein referring to terrorist acts of the Jewish Forces was purchased by Dan McGowan, Executive Director of Deir Yassin Remembered at an auction at  Sotheby's in 2007. 

In Israel

Monday, April 9 the Zochrot (The Remembering, www.zochrot.org) will commemorate the 64th anniversary of the Dayr Yassin massacre. They will walk along the main street of the village, learn about Deir Yassin and pass some of the Palestinian buildings that are still standing along the road as well as the Kfar Shaul mental hospital, whose buildings were once the core of the village.


They will stop at the remains of the Palestinian cemetery and end the tour in the grove behind the hospital. Zochrot is an NGO whose goal is to introduce the Palestinian Nakba to the Israeli-Jewish public. Signs bearing the names of the victims of the massacre will be carried.

The tour will begin at Kanfey Nesharim 22, Jerusalem, at 16:00, and will end at 18:00.
